Captiva 2011: Day Eight - Travel Day

Traveling with two small kids is no easy feat, but we did it just fine.  Dad even got Mollie to sleep in her stroller during our layover in Atlanta!  Way to go, Grandpa E!

Mom entertained Baylor by letting him watch a little of Finding Nemo on their iPad.

Mollie stayed asleep until I went to sit in our seat on the plane and the overhead fan blew in her face and woke her up.  Gah!!

Of course, our day couldn't be complete without a little snafu; our flight was delayed out of Atlanta and Bryson had to get to class when we got back to Grand Rapids, so he had to get dinner WAY early and acknowledge that he was going to be late for class.  It wasn't a huge deal, but delays are generally irritating.

Baylor actually managed to fall asleep on the plane for a little while.  Good boy!

And Mollie squirmed her way through the flight to Grand Rapids.  Whew!  That was tiring.

But, the important thing is, we made it back safe and sound.  And we didn't lose any of our luggage!  Bonus!

Captiva 2011: Days One and Two

As I mentioned in previous posts, we went on vacation last week.  Our destination, South Seas Island Resort in Captiva, Florida, a vacation spot we've been visiting for years.  Baylor has been there once before, but given his age he obviously doesn't remember it.

Our flight was at noon, so we got up and did our usual  morning routine.  Then we all piled into the car, left the house a complete disaster area, and made our way to the airport.  The kids were interested in what was going on ...

... but neither knew what was ahead.

After checking in and making it through security, complete with a TSA-sponsored stop to have baby food analyzed, we got to our gate and waited.  Mollie spent her waiting time showing Oma how to use the stroller.

And when the kids got antsy, my mom broke out their iPad and let Baylor color a bit.

Apparently flying is torture for a two-and-a-half year-old because at one point just after takeoff, Baylor could be heard saying, "Oh ... my ... gosh!" with saucer-shaped eyes and tears streaming down his face.  Poor kiddo.  Mollie didn't mind it in the least and spent most of the flight hopping from one family member to the next.

We landed in Detroit and hurried on over to our next flight, one I was not exactly looking forward to given Baylor's reaction to the first one.  He did, however, really enjoy the people movers at the Detroit airport.

And the fountain, which turned off just as I was taking this picture.

On the second leg of our flight, Mollie and I took a nap together.  She looks much cuter sleeping than I do.

Don't you think?

Baylor slept, too.

Once we landed, it was time for a ride on the elevator!  (And yes, I chose that shirt for him specifically for the plane.  It was too perfect!)

Baylor helped Oma with the bags.

Then he helped Daddy and Grandpa E test out one of our rental cars.  Right after this picture was taken he exclaimed, "This day is so fun!"  Glad he remembered it fondly in spite of the crying on the plane.

We got some dinner at Matzaluna on our way to Captiva, then Mom and Christine went to get groceries and we continued on to the condo.  Baylor got to ride the elevator once we got there, and, needless to say, he was thrilled.  Bedtime came too early, though, and the change in environment was a little disruptive to the kids' routine.  Oh, and Baylor came down with a lovely cold (coughing and so much snot) in the middle of the night.  So sad for the little buddy!

The next day was bright and sunny and so warm and lovely I could barely contain my joy.  Unfortunately, with the sun up so early and no blackout shades in our rooms, the kids were up earlier than usual every day of the trip.  *sigh*  Such is life.  And Baylor was definitely not feeling or acting like himself, and the cold began to take hold.  But we still enjoyed ourselves; Baylor got to ride the elevator a few more times and we had a good dinner at Holy Smoke, a local barbecue joint.

I could have taken a picture like this every day of the trip ... it was weird to see the moon so clearly during dinner.

In spite of feeling like total crap, Baylor was still able to squeeze a few smiles in with Oma.

Mollie, meanwhile, was completely enamored of the musician playing during dinner.  We are now concerned that she is going to end up making a music video with her high school boyfriend that might go something like this.  *cringe*

On the way back to the condo, Mom plucked a bougainvillea bloom to show to Mollie so I stuck it behind her ear.  She looked positively adorable!

Then she felt the need to try on Baylor's sunglasses.  And now she has officially worn them more than he has.  Awesome.

Baylor started making this face - a face that would continue the rest of the trip - which signaled to the rest of us that he needed his nose wiped.  Yeah, it was that kind of cold.

Stay tuned for the rest of the vacation!  I'll get it posted ASAP!

Cape Cod: Here We Come!

As I mentioned previously, we are taking our second vacation of the year (thank you again, Mom and Dad!) and this time we're visiting Cape Cod! More specifically, we are staying in Chatham, MA and then taking little trips to surrounding towns in the area.

We left early Saturday morning ... and Little B wasn't too happy about being woken up, forced into clothes, and given breakfast at such an early hour.

But, we got him in good spirits by the time we left. And by the time we got on the plane, he was ready to make new friends. The people behind us on the Detroit-Boston leg couldn't get enough of him!

Though he slept on the GR-Detroit leg, he was wide awake the second leg. Which meant that Daddy got to hold him a bit, too!

When Aunt Christine went to the bathroom, we decided to let our squirmy little guy try out an airplane seat. He liked it a lot and sat very well.

We finally made it to Logan Airport in Boston! Whew! It's amazing how much energy you can expend trying to keep up with a wiggly little 9 month-old. Once we got off the plane, we promptly got him into his stroller so he could wiggle relatively unencumbered. He was endlessly curious about the people mover ... and what Daddy was doing behind him.

"Hi, Mom. What's with all the pictures?"

Mom and Dad picked us up at the airport ... they decided to drive out to Massachusetts, in part so we'd have a car and not have to worry about how much we packed. We all made the two hour drive out to Chatham and have settled in nicely. The house is beautiful (good job, Christine!) and the atmosphere here in New England is certainly interesting. I'll post pictures and commentary as often as I have the chance!

Even More Pictures of the Trip

Awww, beautiful sleeping baby on the airplane. Boy, was it warm in there!

First time on the beach! And he was still happy even after that wave caught him in the back of the legs and splashed up his shorts.

A little lifeguard, just like Daddy!

So happy with his green stacking cup. Ah, the simple things in life.

On our way to Florida ... such a happy family!

Teeth and Crawling

Yeah, so he started to cut his second tooth yesterday while on the plane ... though he didn't really seem to mind it much.

And he has started to "crawl" forward! I'll try to get a video of it at some point, though I won't be able to post it until we get home.

Yesterday was a big day, to say the least. First airplane ride, trip to Florida, poop on the plane, second tooth, crawling forward, sleeping on the floor, sleeping in the same room as mommy and daddy, warm weather, ... whoa.

The Best Little Traveler Ever

My son did AWESOME on the plane ride yesterday! Ah woo hoo! He played on my lap and even took a couple little naps. He smiled at everyone and didn't cry when the other babies on the plane (and there were A LOT of them) cried. So proud of my little man.

He did, however, poop on the plane ... I did not like changing him in the airplane bathroom. He is too big for the changing table and we hit a little bit of turbulence when we were in there. Plus, it went up his back so I had to ask one of the flight attendants to ask my husband for an extra outfit.

When we got to Florida, we discovered that his pack n' play didn't make it with us, so he got to sleep on the floor last night (with a little padding underneath and a lot of pillows around him as a makeshift pen). The pack came this morning, so hopefully he'll sleep in that tonight.

So far, his favorite thing about Florida is that there are paddle fans in almost every room of the condo. He can't stop staring at them.
