Father's Day-ish Trip to the Zoo

The day before Father's Day we made our first trip to the zoo of the year.  It was a pretty hot day and a lot of the animals were restful as a result, but a few animals were up to see everyone.

The otters were especially playful, likely in no small part because the bulk of their enclosure is filled with water.  We even got to see them enjoying carrots and zucchini.

The mountain lions were napping, but one lifted its head just as we were walking away.

The capybara, the world's largest rodent and one of my favorite animals at the zoo, was definitely in a restful mood.  Isn't he adorable?!

The flamingos were interested in us ...

... as was the white-faced saki.

The kids may have been red-faced from the heat, but they sure had fun!

We got to see the Bongo up close.

The lion was up high lounging in the shade, but I was able to snap a picture of the beautiful creature.

The chimpanzees were out for a bit before heading back into the cool comfort of their indoor refuge.

This year is our zoo's 125th anniversary, and to commemorate it they are celebrating a different animal's birthday each day; that day it was the cotton-top tamarin's birthday!

Just before we left, I had the kids stand in front of the What Is Your Wingspan? sign.

They are getting so big!

In spite of the heat, it was a really great day, and we're looking forward to going back to visit again this summer!
