Baylor's Birthday: 43 Steps to a Kitchen

My parents got Baylor a play kitchen for his birthday this year, and my sister and I spent an afternoon putting it together a few days before his party. Here's how it went!

We first laid everything out in as close to alphabetical order (each piece was labeled with a letter or two) as we could. It looked pretty daunting as we started out.

Mom had Baylor for the day, but Mollie got to help us out and keep our spirits up with her smiles.

We got underway and kept a steady pace, breaking a couple times for lunch or to feed or tend to Mollie.

It is truly amazing how many pieces go into making a small kitchen like this!

Mollie was a constant source of cheer during our efforts!

Then she fell in love with the plaid on our swivel chairs.

At this point, we were feeling pretty good about our progress.

Then we looked around ... bummer.

Mom called us around 4:30 to see how we were doing; we were only at about step 28 out of 43 total steps and had only reached this point in the construction. And they were hoping to bring Baylor over a little after 5:00! Yikes!

We only hit a few minor snags along the way; a piece came damaged so we had to fix it, a few pieces weren't fitting together properly so sanding and chiseling were involved, and my sister may have accidentally at one point spilled some of the screws from their labeled bins. That last snafu, though, was very easily fixed ... no worries, Christine!

Those last twenty or so steps went pretty quickly, and we soon had the kitchen assembled! And it only took us four working hours!

Baylor got to play with it almost immediately, and he has been smitten ever since.

The laundry center is one of his favorite spots, as I suspected it would be; he loves to help me with the laundry and the timer on his washer/dryer actually dings!

Mollie enjoyed watching her brother play, no doubt anticipating the day she too would get to play with the kitchen.

The dishes are clean!

It was a good start to the second birthday festivities! And I had a lot of fun getting to put something together with my little sister!

It looks like you guys had a great time! That is a wonderful gift, he will play with it for years and Mollie will also love it as she grows up.
